LEGALLY BLONDE" DITSTY BUT FUN
63BROADWAY FUN
NY note.
LEGALLY BLONDE,,B+
If you like Rocky Horror, CATs, Mama Mia, and other
shows that become "camp" with a cult following..
..since our flight actually landed on time....allowing us to catch an unanticipated show on an
official, non vacation trip to NYC for 2 days....
Shut out of most of the big name shows an alterante choice was the muscial version of ditsy movie "Legally Blonde"
it turned out to be fun, the Palace Theatre just the right size, and with females outnumbering males...oh maybe 7:1 it turns out this has now taken on the mama Mia, CATS type of cult of folks from around the world who come to New York to see this thing....some of them dressed in Pink.....the fact is the star who won an MTV national reality search and some of the supporting players are dynamite dancers, and two of the characters--including the former 1998 Miss America hve tremendous voices......
Bailey Hanks (Elle Woods) is he MTV star search winner who gets the lead in the show. She is a dynamo, and truth be told one rarely has seen a modern Broadway musical where the star is probably on stage 85-90 per cent of the time. Lots of songs, lines, dancing and "shtick."
....Like many shows where teenaged girls, their moms, and grannies come back two or more times, there is fast patter, double takes, and enough double entendres and innuendo, that you miss the great lines the first time around...there is plenty of gangsta homage, krumping, and street beats in the choreapgraphy, but the fast-paced dialogue sometimes hits the audience 10 seconds into the next line. For example when someone is canned from their job it is "soooo Apprentice" (as in Donald Trump). A stroll into
Elle's Molly Ringwoldesque ' pretty in (total) pink' Harvard dorm room, produces a line from a visitor: "Well, Hellllloooooo Kitty!.'" If I had not been asked by a friend to stop into the "Hello Kitty" store near by office building down in Panama, to pick up a pink baby gift, I would never have been aware that the Ferragamo and Prada set love this chain of upscale Japanese baby shops in which everything from the carpeting to the teething rings are bright pink.
So...if you're in New York and want to get away from the syrupy Disney stuff and the over hyped Taylor Hicks, Whoopie Golderg, George Wendt shows......Legally Blonde will never be confused with Les Mis or Miss Saigon, but has some good laughs, good sets and direction, and more or less a bundle of fun..
okay...so there you have my first theater review since college
